Meet The Kids

After months of o r g a n i s i n g, form filling, phone calls and meetings ... the day of the Dewsbury Massive dawned...

The Dewsbury Massive was an affectionate name for the North Kirklees Group that participated in the Kirklees Activity Weekend for children with a physical disability.

The ‘Massive’ consisted of eight children and twelve helpers. The twelve helpers came from a varied background but all had an interest in disability awareness and consisted of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Nursing Professionals.

Funding for the Massive Attack was achieved following a collaboration between the Kirklees Parent-Carer Forum, Huddersfield Paediatric Therapists and Social Services and this led to the funding for the specialist respite opportunities.

Picture the scene ... the children and adults gather - EN MASS - at Carlinghow Princess Royal School and eventually the coach turns up, having already experienced itself of the geography of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Batley.

The specialist lift facility on the coach raises not only the party but also their spirits and we leave in a joyous mood reflecting on our memorable sendoff

The coach to our destination was high tension and needed the co-joined mix of the team to manage potential problems ... Never has a sausage roll been responsible for so much friction !

Arriving at Bassenthwaite and the Calvert Trust- all systems go-go-go ...                                    Find a bedroom, bag a bed, be ready...                                                                                         Stride around Derwent Water ... abseil - wheelchairs included ...

We were astounded by the stammina, endurance - energy of these very special kids and their stickability.

All the big people gained as much as the children from their involvement in this experience and we only have the kids to thank for that!!

It really was an holistic-evidence-based `praktise’ at being `one of the gang’ and we hope we adults graduated with at least a credit !
