The way in which a child’s development from a functional point of view is affected may involve difficulties with either one or more of the following:-

Limited gross motor skills development i.e. difficulties in posture, balancing, stamina, body awareness and fine motor planning of gross motor activities.

Difficulties when manipulating small objects coordinating both hands effectively, e.g. when fastening buttons, using a knife and fork, controlling scissors.

Delays in speech and language (both receptively and expressively)

Delays in academic achievement (perceptually in maths, writing and reading both from a physical and a mental processing component)

The aforementioned highlight the effects on physical performance and independence but there are a number of other characteristics that a child may present with.   These may include:

• easily distracted
• activity levels that are either too high or too low
• poor concentration/attention span
• impulsive/lacking in self control
• poor self esteem
• adverse reactions to light, sounds or touch
• social and emotional problems
• difficulties making transitions from one situation to another
